Subcompact luxury SUVs such as the BMW X1, Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Lexus UX and Volvo XC40 offer a premium badge, upscale materials and a raised driving position in a footprint small enough for city parking. They are often the least expensive way into a luxury brand’s showroom, and they are frequently cross-shopped against well-equipped mainstream compact SUVs.

That comparison is the one to think through. Most of these models share their basic architecture with front-wheel-drive cars, so their space and driving feel are closer to a small hatchback than to a larger luxury SUV. What you pay extra for is refinement, interior design, brand-specific technology and, in many cases, a longer basic warranty. A top-trim mainstream SUV can match some of the features for similar money, and it may carry more cargo.

Powertrains differ more than the size suggests. Turbocharged four-cylinders are the norm, some with more power than others, while the Lexus UX is sold as a hybrid focused on gas mileage. Electric alternatives such as the Volvo EX40 sit alongside gas versions in some lineups. Check whether all-wheel drive is standard or optional, since that changes both the price and the EPA estimates.

Rear legroom and cargo volume are where compromises show up. The back seat suits children and shorter trips, and cargo space behind the rear seats can be smaller than in a mainstream subcompact SUV because of sloping rooflines. Compare the seats-up and seats-folded figures if you carry bulky gear.

Finally, watch option pricing. Features like adaptive cruise control, a larger screen or heated rear seats are often bundled into packages, and a few boxes checked can move the price into compact luxury SUV territory.
