Sports cars such as the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Toyota GR86, Subaru BRZ, Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Corvette and Porsche 911 are designed first for driving enjoyment. Practicality comes second, which is exactly why the specs worth comparing differ from those that matter in a family car.

Horsepower gets the headlines, but weight tells the rest of the story. A light car with modest power can feel quicker and more agile on a winding road than a heavier one with far more output, so compare curb weight alongside horsepower and torque. Manufacturer acceleration claims are useful for rough comparisons, but they depend on the transmission, tires and launch conditions.

Layout shapes the character of each car. Most models here are front-engine and rear-wheel drive, the Corvette places its engine behind the seats, and the 911 places its engine behind the rear axle. Some versions add all-wheel drive for traction in bad weather. If you want a manual transmission, check availability for the specific trim, because it is disappearing from many models and remains a key reason some buyers choose one car over another.

Then consider how you will live with it. Two-seaters leave no room for passengers, and 2+2 models have small rear seats better suited to bags or children. Trunk space varies widely, and convertible versions often give up some of it. Low ground clearance can make steep driveways and speed bumps tricky.

Running costs deserve a look too. Many performance engines require premium gas, performance tires wear faster and cost more to replace, and insurance can be higher than for a sedan of similar price. The starting MSRP is only part of the picture, since performance packages add significantly to the price.
